Rethinking Attribution in the Era of AI Overviews

As AI-driven search experiences reshape user behavior, Sosemo outlines a new framework for measuring visibility, influence, and performance

As AI Overviews (AIOs) continue to expand across global search experiences, Sosemo is providing a forward-looking perspective on how brands should rethink attribution in an increasingly AI-driven landscape. While AI-generated responses are changing how users engage with search, the shift is not a reduction in engagement—but a redistribution of how value is delivered and measured.

AI Overviews, which present synthesized answers directly within search results, are now widely available across the United States, United Kingdom, and much of Europe. These experiences enable users to gather information more efficiently, often reducing the need to immediately click on traditional organic listings. As a result, users are clicking less frequently on both organic results and AI-generated experiences, even as overall visibility and influence continue to grow.

This evolution introduces what Sosemo defines as a “zero-click attribution” challenge: the difficulty of assigning value to brand visibility that does not result in an immediate website visit. As discovery increasingly happens within AI interfaces, brands are influencing user decisions earlier in the journey—without always capturing that interaction through conventional metrics.

“The challenge is not that users have stopped engaging—it’s that engagement is no longer tied to a single, trackable action,” said Larry Gurreri, CEO of Sosemo. “Brands are influencing decisions earlier, within AI-driven experiences, and that value isn’t always reflected in traditional analytics.”

Sosemo’s analysis indicates that this shift does not diminish the importance of organic search—it reinforces it. Users may first encounter a brand within an AI Overview, continue exploring through AI-driven interfaces, and later return via direct navigation or branded search before converting.

To better understand this behavior, Sosemo has evaluated geographic “holdout” markets—regions where AI Overviews are not yet widely available due to regulatory considerations. France has emerged as a particularly useful comparison point, offering a natural baseline against markets like the United States where AIOs are pervasive.

Based on this analysis, Sosemo has observed meaningful directional performance differences between markets. “We have observed approximately a 20% lift in both direct access and branded search when comparing the U.S. market to natural geo-holdouts for AIOs such as France,” said Gurreri. “Therefore, it’s safe to say that SEO, by way of AI Overviews, is driving meaningful results.”

These findings reinforce the idea that AI visibility contributes significantly to downstream actions—even when it does not result in an immediate click. However, isolating that impact remains complex. Branded search can be influenced by multiple channels, while direct traffic, though often a stronger signal, still reflects a combination of user behaviors.

As a result, Sosemo emphasizes the need for more flexible attribution models that reflect today’s nonlinear customer journeys. Traditional frameworks—built around rankings, clicks, and last-touch conversions—are increasingly insufficient for capturing the full impact of AI-driven discovery.

Instead, marketers must expand their measurement strategies to include broader indicators of influence, such as direct traffic shifts, changes in branded search volume, and visibility within AI-generated answers. This requires a more holistic, post-click mindset that reflects how users move between AI interfaces and brand experiences over time.

At the same time, this shift is accelerating the importance of advanced optimization strategies. In addition to traditional SEO, approaches such as Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) and Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) are becoming essential to ensure that brand content is selected, cited, and surfaced within AI-generated responses.

Sosemo’s perspective is that the current moment represents a significant opportunity. As AI models evolve, brands that understand how to structure and position their content for AI visibility can establish a competitive advantage—much like early adopters of SEO in its formative years.

Ultimately, AI-driven search is not reducing the value of organic visibility—it is redefining it. Brands that adapt their attribution models and embrace new ways of measuring influence will be better positioned to capture and quantify growth in this next phase of search.
